To hear Conrad Johnson's Kashmere Stage Band of the 1960s and '70s was to behold an amalgamation of jazz, funk, R&B and rock styles with an element of style and showmanship that would befit a professional outfit, let alone a bunch of high school kids from Houston's Kashmere Gardens.
Conrad O. Johnson, one of Houston's greatest jazz educators, spent his final hours prior to his death Sunday at age 92 working to ensure his students' legacy and giving them a final thumbs up for a job well done.
A month ago, a group of Johnson's former students began rehearsals for a concert to benefit a music education and scholarship foundation in his name. The alumni band will perform at 2:15 p.m. today at Kashmere High School.
